Enhancement
Carbon nanofibers offer the potential for increasing
the performance of adhesives and resins. The challenge in using
nanofibers is the presence of excess residual materials and their
inherent low surface energy, which repels resin.
CRG has developed a process for chemically treating
carbon nanofibers that increases polarity and surface energy,
facilitates wetting, and generates reactive groups. This process
removes clumps of graphite, causes the carbon nanofibers to
remain dispersed in resin, and couples the fibers to the resin.
Carbon nanofibers treated with CRG’s process
are a low-weight, high-volume resin additive offering several
benefits. Advantages of carbon nanofiber-rich resin are the
increased matrix strength and toughness, increased thermal
conductivity, and increased electrical conductivity.
