Industries Introduces
Essemplex™ Shape Memory
Polymer at NPE2009
 CRG
Industries exhibited at the NPE2009 International
Plastics Showcase in Chicago, June 22-26. At that show, the
Cornerstone spin-off manufacturing company introduced
a new thermoplastic shape memory polymer, trademarked as Essemplex.
This translucent polymer is manufactured in pellet
form and can be used with injection molding systems to create
specialized "memory" shapes. Essemplex is engineered
with a melt temperature and an activation temperature, and the
melt temperature is higher than the activation temperature. At
its melt temperature, the pelleted polymer can be extruded into
a tailored memorized shape. Above its activation temperature,
the material becomes flexible and conformable, and when cooled
it becomes rigid again.
Applications for Essemplex include a wide range
of injection-molded products that require reconfigurability, such
as toys, sporting equipment, furniture, grips and handles, mounting
brackets, and medical devices. (5-6-2009)
